Maintaining Your MacDon Draper Head

Sep. 8 2014 Tech-Tip By Birkey's

Chris Rewerts, Master Tech at Birkey's Farm Store in Henry, offers some basic maintenance tips for your MacDon draper head. He uses an FD75 MacDon, but all these techniques apply on 2062 and 2162 heads as well. Watch the video, or read the tips below.

Maintaining a Draper Head

Gear Box

The FD75 and 2162 have a gear box with an oil level to check. It should be full.

Filter

Above the gear box you'll see a panel. Behind this panel is a hydraulic oil filter. Consult your specific head manual for replacement schedule. To replace it, you'll need to remove 5 bolts and replace the spin-on filter cartridge.

Hydraulic reservoir

The frame is a hydraulic reservoir. The two sights are your levels. In "cut position," the lower sight should be covered and the upper sight should be empty. The proper oil level is approximately half.

Belt Tension

On your wings, your belt tension is set on a white indicator. The indicator should be halfway in the slot. Turn the bolt to tighten or loosen. Most draper heads have a decal that shows which way to turn the bolt.
