Post-Season Tips From Birkey's

Harvest season is coming to a close and the choices you make now can affect your equipment value and the quality of next year’s harvest. Now is the best time to review your harvest equipment while it’s fresh on your mind. Here is our top 10 list of items to look over before you put the equipment away for the winter.

  1. Conduct a quick look over the equipment and develop a list of items to check. Consult any lists you may have made during the season.
  2. Remove any shield and covers to blow off dirt and debris both on the outside and inside. Harvest debris can attract rodents that can chew on wires and other components.
  3. Open concaves, rock trap, and sieves to look for any issues.
  4. Check bearings for any corrosion, spun on a shaft, or if they are loose.
  5. Look over belts and chains for any visible damage or signs of wear.
  6. Check the augers and conveyors on your combine and grain carts for wear and damage.
  7. Look over your headers for any signs of wear.
  8. Did your tractor pull the grain cart this season? Give the tractor a look over for any signs of issues and uneven wear.
  9. Change oil and filters while looking over and greasing fittings.
  10. Skip steps 1 - 9 and schedule a Customized Maintenance Inspection with your local Birkey’s service department. Completing a CMI will give you peace-of-mind by allowing our factory-trained technicians to complete a 100+ point inspection on your machine along with the replacement of most fluids and filters.
